Hutt Heat Women earn BRONZETop of Page
  26 Jun 2017, 7:41pmitem # 2092

After a tough semi-final loss on Saturday afternoon, the fight between Hutt Heat Women and North Harbour was always going to be a passionate one.

Having lost key centre forward Casie Bowry through injury, Hutt Heat lacked firepower at the beginning of the match but only after an Evie Mills outside shot from a man up to lead 1-0. Heat were hesitant on attack early on, allowing North Harbour to convert down the other end.

North Harbour were ahead 5-2 at half time, thanks to excellent work in centre forward from Emily Nicholson, who scored four of her team’s five goals.
Hutt Heat faced a three goal deficit heading into the third quarter. It was Koren Wilkinson who scored two goals in the quarter to spark Hutt Heat into fire, highlighted by a Kate Enoka lob close to three-quarter time to burst into the lead 7-6.

Veteran Kirsten Hudson stepped up in the final quarter to restore the one goal buffer, but Ema Carevic pulled through for North Harbour with two goals of her own in the final quarter to equalise and she would have the last say of the game in regular time for 8-8.

The NZWPNL bronze medal was to be decided by penalty shoot-out.
The two sides traded blows down each end of the pool in the shootout, but Gabby Crothall had the final say when she made a save for Hutt Heat and with it took the 2017 bronze medals.

2017 FINA World Men’s Junior Water Polo Championships
Congratulations to Hamish Booker who has been named in the New Zealand junior men’s team for the 2017 FINA World Men’s Junior Water Polo Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.

The junior world championships will be held from August 5-13.

The championships are the 19th running of the event, in which New Zealand has not been represented since 2009. The team will play Australia, Argentina, hosts Serbia, and China after after being placed in Group C at the official draw in Budapest, Hungary in February.
The young team will be out to continue the men’s programme’s recent dominance over China; the under 18 team won 13-12 at last year’s youth world championships in Montenegro, followed up by the senior team’s 5-4 win over the national side last month at the FINA World League Intercontinental Tournament on the Gold Coast.

Following the New Zealand Under 21 National Championships, the team will depart for Montenegro on July 12th for preparation before arrival in Belgrade, Serbia on August 3rd.
